MICRODERMABRASION
Microdermabrasion is a common cosmetic procedure used for facial rejuvenation. It is also known as Particle resurfacing, Power peel, Derma-peel or Parisian peel. It takes about 20-30 minutes and there's no down-time for the skin to recover. That's why it's also sometimes called a "lunchtime peel."
A common thought is that Microdermabrasion removes the top layer of skin when actually this is completely false. Microdermabrasion simply refers to the removal of the dead skin cells that rest atop the skin’s surface layer by means of an abrasive surface. The removal of these dead skin cells, or stratum corneum, is an excellent way to rejuvenate the complexion leaving a smooth somewhat shiny appearance that looks healthy, plumped and fresh. This technique works particularly well on the tiny lines, mild age spots, sun damage and mild acne.
How does Microdermabrasion work
The skin can be divided into 3 major layers:
Epidermis The outer, barrier layer consisting mainly of dead skin cells
Dermis The middle layer that contains the structural parts of the skin including collagen and elastic tissue
Subcutaneous tissue The bottom layer that contains fat and larger blood vessels

Effects of Microdermabrasion on Appearance of Skin as whole
Microdermabrasion works best when performed as a series of treatments - typically six - every 7 to 10 days. Noticeable changes can be seen after the first treatment - usually smoother, healthier looking skin. After a series of treatments oiliness is decreased, dilated pores are less pronounced, and areas of thick skin are thinner. Fine wrinkles sometimes appear smoother.

Effects of Microdermabrasion on the Epidermis
Microscopic examination of the epidermis reveals several changes that make this layer appear more healthy.

p
The thickness of the epidermis is increased because new cells are being produced more rapidly.
p
The cells of the lower layers of the epidermis are knit together in a more consistent "basket weave" configuration, instead of a haphazard arrangement.
p
The barrier function of the epidermis is disrupted in the first 24 hours causing the skin to be drier than usual, however, after 7 days the skin is more hydrated than before.

Effects of Microdermabrasion on the Dermis
The dermis is the layer that is the most improved with Microdermabrasion. Chemical changes occur immediately that causes the dermal layer to also become thicker and healthier after a series of treatments.

  • The thickness of the dermis is increased
  • The number of collagen fibers are increased and they are thicker, more tightly packed, and more consistently organized
  • The number of elastic fibers is increased and they are oriented vertically instead of horizontally giving the dermal layer more "spring".
  • The number and size of fibroblasts, cells that make collagen, are increased.
  • The presence of numerous chemicals that are involved in the inflammatory process show that a reparative process is going on.
  • Changes in the blood vessels show an increase in blood flow in the dermis, essentially feeding the reparative process.
  • An important part of creating this inflammatory response is the mechanical stretching of the skin cause by the negative-pressure component of the procedure.

In a nutshell, Microdermabrasion works by causing a small amount of trauma to the skin, causing the skin to repair itself in a more organized fashion. This creates younger, healthier looking skin.

Microdermabrasion method

There are over 100 different Microdermabrasion machines in the market, but they all have the same basic design.

Microdermabrasion with Crystal
The machine essentially uses a powerful device to spray microcrystals across the skin surface and an electronic vacuum for the skin.

The microcrystals used are usually aluminum dioxide (corundum powder) which is a very fine, very hard, sand -like material that blasts away the uppermost layer of dead skin cells on the skin's epidermis.  Other types of crystals which can be used are Sodium chloride crystals, Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) crystals and Magnesium oxide crystals. The electronic vacuum then pulls the medical grade crystals across the skin's surface through a stainless steel or glass wand. When the wand makes contact with the skin, the system is "closed" and the vacuum effect pulls the used crystals and dead skin into a waste container.

Microdermabrasion without Crystals
There are some microdermabrasion systems that do not use crystals. These machines use a sandpaper- or diamond-tipped handpiece that mechanically abrades the skin, and the usual suction system that vacuums the exfoliated particles away.

Pain From Microdermabrasion

Because Microdermabrasion allows the controlled removal of the outermost layers of the skin, there is little pain involved and improvement in the skin's appearance can be seen immediately.

Who should consider Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is right for all skin types and for anyone interested in minimizing the appearance of:

  • Scarring
  • Fine lines
  • Pigmentation problems
  • Uneven skin tones
  • Dull, lifeless and sun-damaged skin
Benefits of Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion gives immediate visible results! By performing a gentle skin exfoliation, it successfully treats a wide range of skin problems of both the face and body. Even after the first treatment, the skin of the face feels smooth and fresh.

The treatment is suitable for all skin types and is particularly effective in:

  • Reducing moderate early ageing signs of lines and wrinkles overall rejuvenation for aged skin.
  • Provides stimulation of fibroblasts for collagen reproduction and rejuvenation of the overall skin with improved tone, elasticity and muscle tone.
  • Enhances penetration of approved topical actives after treatment.
  • Perfect for congested skin with open pores, comedones and acne prone skin - deeper exfoliation can significantly help thickened, blemished facial skin and acne scarring.
  • It is also extremely effective for sun-damaged skin and could reduce mild pigment irregularities (hyperpigmentation) in the face.

Contraindications of microdermabrasion

  • Patients who took Accutane for the previous 6 months
  • Pregnant or nursing women
  • People suffering from active herpes simplex lesions
  • Patients with malignant tumors
  • Keratosis
  • Active rosacea
  • Weeping acne
