The objective of this training program is to enable the graduate to be prepared to enter practice with a firm foundation in the didactic and clinical knowledge necessary to treat the child dental patient.

The program would include a review course in pediatric dentistry that covers the basic information needed for entrance into the pediatric dental clinic. Discussions to review the literature and its clinical implications on a wide variety of topics such as growth and development, restorative dentistry, pediatric medicine, orthodontics and behavior management are held.

The course would overall include the followings:

        Assess and treat pulpal problems in primary and young permanent teeth
        Describe the etiology and treatment procedures for occlusion and space maintenance problems
        Collect data, evaluate, diagnose and treatment plan for the child patient from infancy to adolescence
        Understand pain and anxiety control measures including behavioral management, use of drugs and              medications and hospital treatment
        Understand the basic principles of operative dentistry for primary and young permanent teeth and              perform various procedures including amalgam, composite and stainless steel crowns
        Understand psychosocial principles, behavior management and how to apply these skills for better patient              care
        Understand general anesthesia, nitrous oxide, conscious sedations and the use of non-pharmacological              techniques to manage anxiety
        Understand how to fabricate and use removable appliances, space maintainer, and lingual arches
        Perform uncomplicated extractions of teeth and root tips and minor pre-prosthetic surgical procedures,              including those requiring uncomplicated flap procedures
